Why it matters
The mōlī “mother ship” is Kuaihelani, or Midway Atoll, a Hawaiian Island about one thousand miles northwest of Kauaʻi. Every year there are approximately 500,000 nests on Kuaihelani. However, these three small islands are just a few feet above sea level, and severe storms as well as rising sea levels create a dangerous future. But nesting on the north shore of Kauaʻi and other areas across the high Hawaiian Islands can provide a safer future. Wherever there are 1) elevated bluffs 2) protection from non-native predators (cats, dogs, pigs) and 3) people who care, we find a Noahʻs Ark for the magnificent mōlī and other native seabirds.
